For the amount one (I fucking hope...) dealer is charging for a C7, you can get a used Gallardo. I browse DuPont a lot and see these for just a hair under $100k. So, would you take that deal?

I wouldn't. I say that as someone who grew up riding in the back of F-bodies, who's mother's car was a third gen formula 350, who spent much of his childhood making paper V8 models. I want an LS1 about as bad as you want your cock inside Christina Hendricks. But no. The C7 is not as good as a semi-rare italian sports car.

That's not GMs fault though. They're not the ones asking $100k for their very good, vastly improved sports car. This one moronic dealer is. This is why we can't have nice things, people.

Now let's all do a GIS for who Christina Hendricks is.

I would take an MT Gallardo all day long. Screw the maintenance costs! It will also be more rare than a C7 (despite the Gallardo's long production run). And the Gallardo has actually been one of the most reliable Italian supercars (or near-supercar, depending on what your definition of supercar is) around.

Plus the Gallardo won't be depreciating all that much. It's already lost most of it's value. The C7 for $100K will depreciate a ton in just 3 months.

I'm not saying I don't love the C7, I do. I just wouldn't spend $100K on it. I'd wait a couple years and buy a slightly used one for way less. I don't like buying anything brand new.

Or go to a dealer that isn't tacking on a near 100% markup on the C7...

Gallardo no question. The back of it is not batshit ugly.

Not bad, but certainly not my first choice.

Why is GM standing for any dealers doing it? Do they have no say in the matter? Can't they threaten to retaliate against the dealership?

Just seems like bad business...

Between the two I'll take the Lambo especially if it has three pedals. But really I'd pick up a E61 and an NSX and I can die happy.

MSRP... The "S" stands for suggested. Dealer sets final price. The market does not suggest $100k for a new C7 is fair, which is why nobody will buy it. Except maybe some poor sucker. Can't blame them for trying, I guess?

It is bad business. I figure asking a nearly 100% markup will send plenty of people over to a different dealer.

They have no say in the matter. The dealerships are separate private entities and the cars aren't owned by the manufacturer anymore. Usually, the finance company holds the titles, but if they also own the dealership, then they can set the price to be whatever they feel like it should be.

All stores profit from markup of some kind on the products they buy, and then resell to us. A 100% markup though? That would be crazy in most circumstances.

Edit: GM isn't completely powerless, though. If they don't like what a chain of dealers is doing, they could always just refuse to sell cars to that dealer/investor group. But that's a double edge sword in the US; Car manufacturers aren't legally allowed to directly sell their products to consumers, so cutting off a major dealer network/investor group might be shooting yourself in the foot if they're large and powerful enough. They can always just pick a new brand of car to sell. How are you going to sell your cars to the public if dealer networks don't want to deal with your business practices and arbitrary restrictions? In this way, dealers have the power to tarnish the image of auto brands, and it's usually consequence free.

That's true, the S is for suggested. And you're right GM doesn't need to step in. Dealers will hurt themselves when they lose customers to other dealerships.

A smart dealership will want to sell as many as possible instead of get the highest margin possible. Customers often come back to the same dealership nowadays. Once you're comfortable with a salesman and service tech it's easiest to stick with those people. Dealers can miss out on future Chevy sales by losing customers to neighboring dealerships.
